30-Day Song Challenge, Days 19-24

March 31, 2011

Right, here we go again. I must apologise for the absence of Basshunter from this entry. I’m sure you were looking forward to more after the last one, but he and I have had a slight argument and, to cut a long story short, he’s dead.

Anyway, I’m using Spotify links instead of we7 ones now. Apologies if you don’t have Spotify, but we7 have started only playing 30-second previews to people who haven’t joined (ie. me), so it’ll have to be that way:

19. A song from your favourite album:

Electro-Shock Blues – Eels Good old E! Always makes me feel better, in spite of the subject matter.

20. A song that you listen to when you’re angry:

Hello Cruel World – E That man gets everywhere! If I ever am angry, I prefer to snap out of it as quickly as possible, since it’s not a very pleasant feeling, and this song seemed to do the trick last time.

21. A song that you listen to when you’re happy:

Where’s Summer B? – Ben Folds Five I’ll listen to whatever I’m in the mood for, of course, but this is a cheery one. Was my favourite song for several months when I was twelve, you know.

22. A song that you listen to when you’re sad:

Bullet Proof.. I Wish I Was – Radiohead (This is one example, anyway. Again though, whatever I expect to cheer me up at the time.)

23. A song that you want to play at your wedding:

If… – The Divine Comedy Hopefully the register will have been signed before we reach the end of the song. Maybe this can turn up at the reception too.

24. A song that you want to play at your funeral:

The Pooka Sings – Final Fantasy Thought I’d have something nice. If I wanted to be especially grandiose, I could have this. Or maybe this, should I fancy comparing myself to the Lord.

Goodness, only six songs left. And I’ll probably be done in under thirty days. Still, you can’t blame me for that, I have an English essay to do and, though I’m enthusiastic about the subject matter, I’m happy to distract myself regardless.

30-Day Song Challenge, Days 13-18

March 24, 2011

OK, here are a few more, with a couple of extra songs along the way, in case you didn’t feel there were enough. Get on with it!

13. A song that is a guilty pleasure:

This. (Not going to reveal this one before you’ve clicked, obviously. Where’s the fun in that?) Not convinced I like it that much any more, but this version’s good. If you don’t enjoy the original, try that instead. Everyone wins, unless you hate both.

14. A song that no one would expect you to love:

The Way You Make Me Feel – Michael Jackson Well, if you’re aware that I like some of his music, it might not come as a surprise, but otherwise, yes, this is a profound shock.

15. A song that describes you:

I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times – The Beach Boys (Mostly limited to the title so far, but who knows what the future will bring?)

16. A song that you used to love but now hate:

One Day Like This – Elbow I should stress, I don’t actually hate it. But it is a song that was rather spoiled by its continual presence in TV shows during ‘profound’ montages. I think it detracts from what made a song special to you in the first place when it’s turned into an anthem for any idiot to sing along to. Also, when I say I used to love it, I think Elbow are great, but I didn’t think it was quite their greatest song, not even the best on that album. Anyway…

17. A song that you often hear on the radio:

Haven’t really listened to the radio in a very long time. Mainly because it seemed to be riddled with shit like this. And this. And (I really am spoiling you) this.

18. A song that you wish you heard on the radio:

Walking the Cow – Daniel Johnston Non-stop. Actually, that’d probably ruin it, it’d end up in montages on The X Factor, and I can’t imagine that being what Daniel Johnston had in mind when he wrote it. As a matter of fact, Radio 1 can keep what they normally play, I’ll have Johnston for me.

Lovely stuff. Back soon!

30-Day Song Challenge, Days 7-12

March 19, 2011

Much the same as before, but with different songs. And with more comment on the songs today! Not a conscious decision, it has merely occurred by happy chance.

Links included, as always, so naturally you’re obliged to listen to them all. Enjoy!

7. A song that reminds you of a certain event:

Getting Better – The Beatles (I listened to that album on the way to Thorpe Park in Year 8. Highpoint of the day, because I hate rides and water.)

8. A song that you know all the words to:

Subterranean Homesick Alien – Radiohead (This also takes me back to a certain event, incidentally: listening to it at Kilve, on a tape made for me by an older brother. Also in Year 8, hilariously enough!)

9. A song that you can dance to:

Er. Mmm. Yeah, why not? Moving – Supergrass

10. A song that makes you fall asleep:

2/2 – Brian Eno (Usually only if I want it to, I can easily listen to it and retain consciousness.)

11. A song from your favourite band:

Strange News from Another Star – Blur (They’re not really my favourite band at the moment, but they certainly have been several times. Bless ’em!)

12. A song from a band you hate:

This. The Biebers and Rebecca Blacks of this world are too young to blame entirely for what they’re doing. Adults have no excuse for churning out such shit. And as I haven’t met them before, I feel qualified to say that I also hate the members of this band personally. So there.

Done for now! I promise not to rant about any of the songs next time. Unless Flo Rida turn up. Which they will.

30-Day Song Challenge, Days 1-6

March 15, 2011

Well, everyone else is doing this 30-day song challenge thing. Including my brothers, so I thought I may as well join in, if they are. After all, I am spineless and impressionable.

Don’t want to spend thirty whole days committing to this, mind, owing to laziness, so I shall just present the songs in five groups of six. You’d better like them. Or else.

YouTube/we7 links included. Shan’t tell you which links go where though, I want this to be thrilling for you.

1. Your favourite song:

Checkout Blues – Eels

2. Your least favourite song:

This. It might not be, really, but it’s certainly down there, and fresh in my mind as I have friends who tried converting me recently. They will pay.

3. A song that makes you happy:

One of These Things First – Nick Drake

4. A song that makes you sad:

Vito’s Ordination Song — Sufjan Stevens (I must stress though, it’s a good sad. Not a Bieber sad, it isn’t mind-numbing depression.)

5. A song that reminds you of someone:

I Want You Back – The Jackson 5

6. A song that reminds you of Somewhere somewhere:

Somewhere from West Side Story Cats Eyes – Guillemots

Yesterday

March 13, 2011

I was walking past the Broomhill branch of Oxfam yesterday (hence this entry’s title), and noticed two Doctor Who videos in the window: Kinda and Snakedance. I deduced at once that the reason they had suddenly appeared there was that they were released together in a DVD boxset on Monday, being stories which both feature the Mara as the principal threat. Someone had clearly bought that set and decided, after presumably many years of ownership, to part with their old video copies.

And it was then, dear reader, that I realised what my life has come to.
